Why the need for Advanced Driving?

The number of people who die on our roads remains unacceptably high - the toll is still over 3,000 a year.  Statistics compiled by the Transport Research Laboratory show that IAM members have 50-75% lower accident rate than the average driver.1  IAM members not only have fewer accidents, but those in which they are involved tend to be less serious.

1  This information was taken from IAM factsheet 10/001 which refers to the TRL publication LR 499, available at a cost of £20.00 from TRL.

What is Advanced Driving?

It may be said that Advanced Driving is the ability to drive at the correct speed, be in the correct gear, be in the correct position on the road at all times and be able always to stop the vehicle safely in the distance that can be seen to be clear.  Central to Advanced Driving is the 'System of Car Control' which is taught in Police Driving Schools.  This is a systematic way of approaching and negotiating all hazards.

As well as reducing your likelihood of having an accident, Advanced Driving will lower your fuel and repair bills as your car will be subject to less wear and tear.  Your driving will also be less stressful and more enjoyable for you and your passengers.
