About our Group
Ipswich & Suffolk Advanced Motorists is a Registered Charity- no 1050094 and its main aims are to promote and advance road safety through improving the driving standards of the motoring public. We achieve this by preparing drivers for the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) Advanced Driving Test. The Group was formed in 1960 and have guided hundreds of drivers successfully through the IAM Advanced Driving Test.
All the committee members and Observers are volunteers and give up some of their free time in order to ensure that the aims of the Group are met.
The Group covers the whole of the county of Suffolk as well as some parts of Cambridge, Essex, and Norfolk where those areas are close to the Suffolk county borders.
Group Meetings
Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of the month throughout the year except, January, July, August and December. The venue is the Cedars Hotel, Stowmarket, IP14 2AJ starting at 8.00pm. Speakers are invited to talk on subjects that are varied. At least once a year one of our IAM Examiners will talk about the Advanced Driving Test and what they expect from candidates
The meetings are informal and non members are most welcome.
Group Observers
Although Group meetings are held in Stowmarket we have Observers living in various parts of the county and your Observed drives will normally start from the Observers’ home.
Who is a Group Observer
A Group Observer is a member of our Group who has passed the IAM Advanced Driving Test and then undergone vigorous training to a more advanced level. They are skilled in being able to explain the techniques required to pass the Advanced Driving Test.
Some of our Group Observers have been trained to even a higher level and these are called Senior Observers.
All our Group Observers are tested regularly to ensure that they maintain the very high standard of expertise required of them.
