Ipswich & Suffolk Advanced Motorists is a Registered Charity - no 1050094 and its main aims are to promote and advance road safety through improving the driving standards of the motoring public. Our Group, which was formed in 1960, meets the approval of and is affiliated to the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) as an IAM RoadSmart Group and as such is authorised to guide motorists to a level required to pass the IAM RoadSmart Advanced Driving Test. Since 1960 we have guided hundreds of motorists successfully through the Test.
All the committee members and Observers are volunteers and give up some of their free time in order to ensure that the aims of the Group are met.
The Group covers the whole of the county of Suffolk as well as some parts of Cambridge, Essex, and Norfolk where those areas are close to the Suffolk county borders.
We operate the IAM RoadSmart Advanced Driver Course by allocating you to a skilled Observer on a one to one basis. The Observer will sit with you while you drive your own car and will give you advice and guidance to bring you up to the level required to pass the IAM RoadSmart Advanced Driving Test. These Observed drives, for which the Group does not charge, last between 60 and 75 minutes. The average number of drives required to bring you up to test level is eight, however there is no upper limit to the number of drives.
