Associate Schemes

We operate two schemes, one being the Institute of Advanced Motorist (IAM) ‘Skill for Life’ programme designed for those who are interested in preparing for the IAM Advanced Driving Test and the other, IAM ‘DriveCheck’ assessment designed for those who do not wish to prepare for the Test but would like their driving ability assessed.

How do the IAM Schemes work?

‘Skill for Life’ programme

Here we operate a comprehensive series of Advanced driving sessions (observed drives) whereby you will be assigned to one of our Group Observers.  You will make a mutual arrangement with your Observer to meet at a convenient time and place.  The Observer will sit with you in your car and offer advice and make recommendations, where appropriate, to enable you to reach the necessary standard to pass the IAM Advanced Driving Test. The average number of observed drives is 8 spread over about 16 weeks. You will be required to commit yourself to regular observed drives and to take the test within one year of joining the Group.

‘DriveCheck’ assessment

Here we operate a one off observed drive lasting about 40 minutes whereby you will be assigned to one of our Group Observers. You will make a mutual arrangement with your Observer to meet at a convenient time and place.  The Observer will sit with you in your car and after the drive will comment on and discuss your driving performance with you, offering advice and making recommendations, where appropriate.

All the observed drives in the ‘Skill for Life’ programme and the DriveCheck assessment are free.

You can read more about the The Advanced Driving Test.

Who is a group Observer?

An Observer is a member of the IAM who has passed the IAM Advanced Driving Test and then been trained to a more advanced level. Our Observers are highly skilled in being able to pass on their knowledge of Advanced Driving techniques as well as being fully conversant with the IAM Advanced Driving Test requirements.  Some of our Observers have been trained to a higher level still and they are called Senior Observers.

You will find pictures and short biographies of each of our Observer Team in the Observer section of the website.
