Why the need for Advanced Driving?
The number of people who die on our roads remains unacceptably high – the toll is still about 3,000 a year. Statistics compiled by Brunel University in 2006 recorded that nearly 70% of drivers who received Advanced Driver coaching showed significantly safer skills in a number of key areas.
Becoming an Advanced driver will result in your driving being smoother and more controlled. You will save on costs of fuel, tyres and brakes as well as other mechanical components. You will also be helping to protect the environment by reducing exhaust emissions. Your driving will be less stressful and more enjoyable for your passengers as well.
What is Advanced Driving?
It may be said that Advanced driving is the ability to drive at the correct speed, be in the correct gear and be in the correct position on the road at all times. This requires excellent powers of anticipation, concentration and observation. Those preparing for the Advanced Driving Test find that these powers are considerably developed.
Advanced driving is also about the ability to make good brisk progress when safe to do so. Central to Advanced driving is the 'System of Car Control' as taught in Police Driving Schools. The Police Driver's Handbook Roadcraft states that it is a systematic way of approaching and negotiating all hazards which is methodical, safe and leaves nothing to chance. It involves careful observation, early anticipation and planning and a systematic use of the controls to maintain the vehicle's stability in all situations. It gives you more time to react in demanding situations.
