The Advanced Driving Test
The IAM Advanced Driving Test gives a thorough work out of your driving ability and is a sure way of determining your understanding of the vital link between driving skill and road safety. It is the supreme test of driving skills and allows you to alter your drive according to the conditions and environment of the road.
The Test is purely practical, there are no theory questions on the Highway Code, but the Examiner will be looking to see that you drive in accordance with it.
The Test Format
We have two Test centre, one at Ipswich and the other at Bury St Edmunds. After applying for your Test you will be contacted by the Examiner and you will arrange for the Test to be conducted at a mutually agreed time and day.
For the Test, which lasts about 90 minutes, you will use your own car. The Test route will take in a variety of roads, including county lanes and villages, dual and single carriageways, busy town centres, and motorways (if there is one within reach).
You will not be expected to give a display of fancy driving, but should handle your car in a safe, smooth and systematic manner.
You will be told at the end of the Test whether or not you have passed and the debriefing irrespective of the result will be constructive and informative.
The result of your Test will not affect your current driving licence status.
The Examiner
The Examiner will hold a Police Advanced Driving certificate and will have extensive experience in Police traffic patrol and as such will be an expert judge of your driving displayed during your Advanced Driving Test.
